25km
25km is an artistic project inspired by the Greek city of Eleusis and the ancient history of the ''Eleusinian Mysteries''. The ''Eleusinian Mysteries'' was the highest religious celebration in Ancient Greece, celebrated in the Sacred City of Eleusis once a year, in honor of goddesses Demeter and Persephone. A significant ritual of the Mysteries was the Procession of nearly 10.000 people who walked from Athens to Eleusis in order to pursue a new, fearless life. In 25km four women follow the steps of the ancient Greeks and walk in silence for 25 kilometers in search of new personal and collective meanings. The project focuses on the immense experience provided by a long walking route and further explores ways in which such a ritual can be translated into movement and dance. The emotion of anticipation at the starting point, the ephemeral contact with nature, the need for body catharsis, and the prolonged arrival, all represent aspects of the research and form the basis for the composition of 25km’s collective ritual. The project was realized in the framework of 2023 ELEVSIS – European Capital of Culture and was supported by the Cultural and Development Non-profit Organization NEON through its Annual Grants Programme.
The film is available for a certain number of online screenings during the festival.
