Concentramento of Rhodes - Consecrating Freedom

In the early hours of October 28, 1940, by order of the commander of the "Italian islands of the Aegean" Cesare Maria De Vecchi, those Dodecanese who had Greek citizenship were arrested by carabinieri and taken to a confined area of the moat of the old city of Rhodes. Within days, more than 300 men between the ages of eight and sixty, from various islands of the Dodecanese, were being held captive in what became known as the "Concentranto" camp. The fear of confinement and the difficult living conditions were offset by the spirit of unity and patriotism of the prisoners as well as by the practical solidarity shown by the Rhodesian people as a whole. Despite the adversity, the imprisoned Dodecanese has not stopped hoping and dreaming, after centuries of slavery, of the coveted freedom.
