The screenings and the parallel events are as always completely free of charge and will be according to the local covid-19 protocol.

The Opening Ceremony

At the opening ceremony of the festival (8/4) there will be the screening of the documentary "My grandfather, Papaflessas" (2022) written and directed by Kleoni Flessa, produced by the Perfecture of Peloponnese and executive produced by the Creative Documentary Center of Kalamata, organizer of the festival.

With beautiful locations in Turkey, Romania Ukraine and Babis Alexiadis' animation, they are retelling the story of Papaflessas and the Greek Revolution of 1921 in a more intimate way.

Katerina Maragkoudaki was the director of photography of the project and Arion Gyftakis wrote the original score, who will perform in the opening ceremony with his Jazz quarter, Artet.

The parallel events

As part of this year's special "Civilizations of Sub-Saharan Africa", there will be a unique exhibition of ritual masks by the collector and psychologist / professor, Fotis Kangelaris, from April 3 to 13, who has, perhaps, the largest collection in the world. In fact, he will be in Kalamata and will give a lecture on "Ritual Masks, Psychoanalytic and artistic remarks". The masks will be in Gallery A49 right behind the Cultural Center of Kalamata.

The subject of Africa will also be addressed by director Robert Rombout's seminar "Creating a Documentary", which is being held in collaboration with the Athens School of Fine Arts. Twelve graduate students will be invited to create a modular documentary with portraits of artists of African descent, living and working in Athens.

The parallel activities of the 8th Documentary Festival include the "Storylab" film workshop with the director Erik Knudsen from Great Britain and the professor of the Department of Sound and Visual Arts of the Ionian University, Iakovos Panagopoulos. The workshop is implemented in collaboration with the Film Department of the Aristotle University. In it, students from three different universities in Greece will be invited to make short films.

Other activities include:

Oral History Laboratory, with the Archaeologist Despina Eugenidou, for the general public of Kalamata and a masterclass for "The light in the performing arts" with the distinguished designer of Theater and Cinema Lighting, Katerina Maragoudaki, for the students of Theater Studies in Nafplio. There will also be a workshop on "Documentary in Education" by EKOME addressed to the educational community.

For our little friends
A seminar in the form of a Walk in Nature, with presenter Stefania Charitou (Media Professor) for elementary and high school students will be held in Kalamata, Tripoli and Xylokastro and an animation seminar with figures made of plasticine, under the supervision of Thomas Kunstler especially for primary school children and people with moderate mental disabilities, in Kalamata and Xylokastro.

It is worth noting that from this year the Festival offers "Documentaries for All", a new institution that allows people with hearing or vision problems as well as children with moderate mental disabilities to access documentaries through compilation, audio description and intralingual subtitling SDH.
