"Documentaries for all" 2022-2024

Peloponnisos International Doc Film Festival is making documentary accessible for the hard of hearing community, blind and mentally disabled people!


The festival is being transformed with the initiative “Documentaries for All”, that will allow disabled people to have access to the program through dubbing, audio description and SDH subtitles.
It has a very important educational and cultural purpose as it is helping with the access of the disabled community in the cultural heritage. In addition, it is very important to have access towards educational documentaries. “Documentary for all” is an initiative of Creative Documentary Center in collaboration with Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting and Department of Audio Visual Arts of Ionian University that will choose the films and oversee the technical aspects of the program. During the 7th Peloponnisos International Doc Film Festival in the summer in Kalamata two documentaries were screened with audio description and SDH subtitles for blind and d/Dear individuals, initiated by EKOME.


Furthermore, from 2022-2024 the films chosen will be able to get dubbed or made in Audio Description and SDH subtitles.
It’s notable that for 2022 all the documentaries that will be screened at 8th Peloponnisos International Doc Film Festival (80 movies) with SDH subtitles, along with 3 films with audio description.
The aim of the program till 2024 is to have at least 20 documentaries made with audio description that will be available in Greece!


Meanwhile there will be special catalogues for the documentaries with the summary and directors’ bio. There also will be in the official homepage in HTML5 so there will be available through screen reader.
For 2022 there will be another 12 foreign films dubbed, suitable for children 5 to 7 years of age and mentally disabled individuals. The project aims to have 10 new documentaries every year available for educational purposes for this certain group.


Moreover Creative Documentary Center of Kalamata is acquiring 45 new educational documentaries for 2022-2024 for the educational online platform so that all students around Greece will be able to enjoy and learn from them.


Along with the films, Creative Documentary Center educators will provide lists of suggested activities before and after the screening for a full educational experience.
In Greece right now there are 30.000 legally blind individuals and 100.000 with partial blindness. Around 30.000 are hard of hearing with 70% of them being under 35 years old. In the same group are the elderly with hearing problems or require a hearing aid. In the Peloponnese region, there are at least 24 schools for mentally disabled individuals. There are 470 schools all over the country for the same group.
